Captain of my soul...

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

INVICTUS by William E. Henley

Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?

Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear. –
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?

Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.

Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?

Free will is thine -- free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.

Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul.

  2. What an inspiration you are to me. Your words, "Do it again" will forever inspire me to not quit and to just keep working when the task before me seems hard or when I feel like quitting because I didn't get it right the first, second, or even 20th time. You are an amazing young man. Thank you for sharing a piece of who you are with all of us. We are all cheering for you and look forward to the next post.

  7. Very inspirational! You have been in our families prayers since we heard of your accident. You are a strong young man, and you have a family who loves you so much. I was at the Bountiful Temple last week, with a friend who knows you, and she was about to put your name on the prayer list. Someone already had, two lines up from where she was going to write your name. I hope the prayers of everyone are lifting you, and will continue to lift you as you have lifted others.

"do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not at all. do not let the HERO in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you have deserved, but have never been able to reach. check your road and the nature of your battle. the world you desire can be won. it exists. it is real. it is possible. it is yours." -ayn rand

  10. WOW I am so amazed at how far you have gotten in your recovery!!!! Gates you are one amazing young man! I was thinking about something that was said on your blog about this accident being the start of your mission and all I can think of is how many lives you have touched and the many more you will touch through this experience! Your family is amazing!! :) I have a little brother on a mission right now in Washington state and reading this makes me think of him and how much I truly love him! Life is so short and shouldn't be taken for granted. If I were to loose him now I would be heart broken!!!! Thank you for your example to me!!!!! I am praying for you and I hope that the Lord will bless you and your family!!!! You are a AMAZING young man Gates!!!!!!!! :)
